Khayelitsha Railway Stations

CLIENT: Intersite
VALUE: R62 million
ROLE: Project Managers

The 4,5km Khayelitsha Rail Extension Project serves to provide more transport access for local residents as well as stimulate economic growth in the sprawling township.

Target Projects oversaw the construction of four rail bridges, four fully accessible stations, two fully accessible transport interchanges and alterations to existing road infrastructure to facilitate connectivity and access to stations and bridges.

Some of the positive contributions of the project included job creation and skills transference. A special design feature was the attention given to and solutions provided for special needs passengers. Traditionally this need was often ignored but in this project it was a key feature of the design and brought the project in line with international standards.

This project was an integral part of the public transport development plan in the Cape Peninsula and the Urban Renewal Presidential Project.
