District Six

This restitution project involves the construction of a new urban precinct for the thousands of people whose land was dispossessed during the notorious apartheid days.

The redevelopment will include residential houses, social amenities and retail commercial facilities.

As Project Managers, Target Projects oversaw two phases to this highly sensitive development. Phase one included bringing the older claimants back first, and as quickly as possible. Phase two included testing various housing solutions for densification typologies and developing a business plan that makes it affordable for approximately 1500 people to return to their land.

This recreation of a community therefore not only needed to celebrate the heritage of its claimants, it also needed to create a sustainable development in this new environment.
