Terminal 2010
Cape Town International Airport
CLIENT: | Airport Company South Africa |
VALUE: | R1.6 billion |
ROLE: | Principal Agents & Project Managers |
Work on Cape Town International Airport's R1.6-billion, multi-storey central terminal building has been completed, providing a world-class experience to visitors. The redevelopment of the New Integrated Terminal building will increase the domestic and international passenger capacity to approximately 14.6 million passengers a year from the current 9 million.
The philosophy of modern airport design is to reduce the stress of passengers. The new Cape Town International Airport certainly does this by using good signage and visible security to create a sense of comfort and safety. This allows passengers to relax and encourages them to take advantage of the fantastic retail and food and beverage facilities. The airport therefore makes great commercial sense by maximising financial returns.
Dubbed the Terminal 2010 project, the redevelopment also integrates the international and domestic terminals by processing passengers on one check-in facility and forms the basis for all future expansion at the airport. Other key features included a fully automated baggage handling system, from check-in to plane, retail facilities planned to enhance the passenger experience and capturing the fabulous views by allowing passengers to not alone gaze at our beautiful Table Mountain but also watch planes arrive and depart.
All of these carefully planned aspects of the project have seen an unprecedented surge in visitors and the airport has become a destination for both families and business people.
Not only did Target Projects drive all of these project features, we also worked closely with ACSA from initiation to completion by taking their business objectives through planning and design to developing this world-class project. By forming a strategic partnership and acting as ACSA's agent we negotiated with various stakeholders and acted as a bridge across various business sectors both within ACSA and externally through suppliers and contractors. We handled the negotiation of all contracts and tenders either directly or through principal contractors depending on cost and ACSA's best interests. Finally we assisted in financial planning over the entire scope of the project and presented that it was a bankable solution to the projects funders.
Thousands of job opportunities were created during this four-year construction project and significantly increased the revenue that ACSA generates from non-aviation related activities.
Target Projects is proud of the awards that Cape Town International Airport has successively won for "Best Airport in Africa" over the past 10 years.
